Wings Over Barbed Wire
The book is in English with occasional German words (place names).
Berlin, 1939. Tailor Karl Weber loves a painter named Lukas—a love that the Nazi state has declared a crime under Paragraph 175. When the Gestapo arrests him and sends him to Sachsenhausen, Karl is stripped of everything: his name, his work, his future, and the man he loves.
The camp takes everything. But it cannot take the sparrow.
She comes each morning, landing on his bunk—a tiny brown creature in a world of grey. She asks for nothing but a crumb, and gives back something Karl thought he'd lost forever: the feeling that he is still alive, still human, still capable of caring.
Around him, other men begin to notice. A criminal. A political dissident. A boy too young to be there. They share bread, they share stories, they protect the small nest hidden behind the wall. In a place designed to destroy everything, they build something fragile and precious.
Wings Over Barbed Wire is a story about love and survival, about the bonds that carry us through the darkest hours, and about the small, stubborn creatures—sparrows, kindnesses, moments of hope—that remind us what it means to be human.
