Necessary Sins (Lazare Family Saga, Book One)

Genre: Historical fiction (family saga with strong romantic elements)
First in a four-book series. Hopefully we’ll be able do all of them together.

Main point-of-view character (limited third-person) in Necessary Sins is a young man, but I the author am female.

Deadline for completion: Flexible but sooner is better

Main narration: General American.

Accents in decreasing order of frequency:
Southern (Charleston, SC)
Irish
French
Enslaved Black (in SC)
Scottish
Haitian Creole

Words and phrases in:
Latin and French
Bits of Irish, Haitian Creole, and Italian.

Later books in the series will add:
Cheyenne (American Indian) POV characters
Enslaved Black POV characters
British English (Cambridgeshire)

The central family in this series, the Lazares, are multiracial with White/French, African/Yoruba, and Indian/Dakota ancestry. They are “passing” as White and culturally White, having been separated from their African and Indian heritages, which individual Lazares will discover, reject, and/or embrace over the series.

Bonus points if you can carry a tune for a few 19th-century songs (one in first book)

Content warnings:
Historical violence such as the Haitian Revolution
Sexual content. Later books in the series have even more explicit sex scenes.
Racial epithets in a historical context.

While the main character of Necessary Sins is a Catholic priest, this is not Christian/inspirational fiction. I was inspired by The Thorn Birds, for anyone old enough to remember that.

Necessary Sins was "Extremely highly recommended" by the Historical Novel Society with endorsement quotes by Kathleen Grissom, New York Times bestselling author of The Kitchen House, among other authors. I've started advertising on Facebook, and I'm seeing good results from that. Contact me if you have questions. Thank you for considering!
